Review: Miktek MK300, the Best Mic You’ve Never Heard Of

miktek mk300

I’m a professional vocalist and have been recording my voice for 30+ years. I’ve been creating and recording music at home since 2009. And I have to say, without a doubt, that the Miktek MK300 is the best mic I’ve ever used.

Why is the Miktek MK300 so good?

First of all, it’s a large diaphragm FET condenser microphone, which means it’s great for capturing vocals. The sound is clear and pristine, and there’s very little noise.

Second, it has a switchable pad and high-pass filter, which allows you to tailor the sound to your specific needs. For example, if you’re recording a loud singer, you can use the -10dB pad to avoid clipping. Or if you want to remove unwanted low frequencies, you can use the 100Hz high-pass filter.

Third, it’s very affordable. For under $200, you’re getting a top-quality mic that will last you for years.

Built To Last

Although its founder, Michael Ketchell, has been producing audio products since the 90s, Miktek probably isn’t the first name that pops into your head when you think of microphones.

The Miktek MK300 is equipped with custom-developed capsules and circuitry. The capsule has two 1-inch diaphragms made out of Mylar with a 0.4-micron layer of evaporated gold on top. It also comes with 3 polar pattern options, a pad and a high-pass filter built in.

Each one of these microphones, made in Nashville, is designed with precision and includes in-house transformers and components that are carefully selected to meet strict tolerances.

This mic is the perfect tool for recording high-quality audio for vocals, drums, acoustic and electric instruments. After examining user reports, I found that several of them praised the clear high-end and open-sounding midrange. They also stated that the sound is exemplary for acoustic guitars for both solo and full band mixes.

Some who are used to modern-sounding mics with highs that sound weak gave praise to the sweet high-end. Others in the same group felt the high frequencies didn’t fit with their style. So be it. Can’t please everyone, but this mic delivers on many levels.

Performance: Vocals A+ | Acoustic Guitar A

I can’t say enough about this mic! Right out of the box I could feel the power of this mic. It is built to last and take a beating. But, after the first pass on a vocal track, I was stunned by the difference between the MK300 and the other two condensers I’ve been using for the last 3 years, a Blue Baby Bottle SL and a Rode NT1-A, both of which are great mics, especially, at this price point.

Where can you get a large-diaphragm FET condenser mic with an output transformer, multiple polar pattern options, a roll-off filter and a pad all for $199? Well, the MK300 has all of those features and it’s available for that price!! Seriously, for $199 you get luxurious studio quality at a bargain basement price.

But, it delivers penthouse sound quality! Every home recording studio should have, at least, one but two if possible.

The Miktek MK300 Large Diaphragm FET condenser will impress the most critical listeners and inspire artists to create their best performance. This mic features a great capsule, superior electronics, and as with our other condenser, the MK300 includes as sweet output transformer.

Best Features

The microphone has three polar pattern settings: cardioid, bidirectional, and omnidirectional. It also has a high-pass filter at 100Hz and -10dB pad to record louder sounds better. The frequency response has a robust bottom end and clear top end, while still maintaining an honest and open midrange. This microphone does especially well when recording acoustic instruments or as overheads on a drum kit, but it really excels in capturing vocals.

  • Multi-pattern large-diaphragm FET condenser microphone
  • Value-packed mic reminiscent of Miktek’s more expensive offerings
  • Switchable cardioid, bidirectional, and omnidirectional polar patterns
  • High-pass filter for reducing low-frequency noise and rumble
  • -10dB pad for recording loud sound sources
  • Sounds great on acoustic instruments, guitar amps, drums, and vocals
  • Includes vinyl pouch and shockmount

Conclusion

If I had $500 to spend on a microphone for my home studio, I’d get two of these mics for those times when you need to vocalists or voiceover artist singing or speaking simultaneously, or when you need to record an acoustic guitar and a vocalist for a podcast. You’ll never need another mic and why not have two?
